Cookies are our business!

Our cookies debuted on shelves at ShopRite in New London on August 1, 2016, creating jobs and economic opportunities for people with IDD as well as a buy-local option for cookie connoisseurs of all ages.

The Arc’s Culinary Arts program, in which participants learn valuable skills that prepare them for jobs in a variety of food and restaurant businesses, spawned a successful micro-enterprise that’s really taken off over the past three years. The Arc’s incredibly delicious Classic Crunch Chocolate Chip Cookie is now available in many stores region-wide. Our cookies are also available for sale online.

An existing partnership with ShopRite led to expanded cooperation as The Arc Eastern Connecticut sought partners to bring a product to market that would support its vocational training initiatives as well as our fiscal bottom-line. Also partnering in the venture was the Mentoring Corps for Community Development (MCCD), a team of retired business executives based in Old Lyme that supports local nonprofits and innovators seeking to solve economic challenges in new ways.

The Arc ECT leadership team, in concert with the MCCD and local ShopRite owner Ken Capano and his team, embarked on a product development journey that included focus groups, brainstorming packaging solutions and undertaking a host of critical product development decisions. The result was, in our opinion and that of pretty much anybody who’ve tasted them, one of the best chocolate chip cookies on the market. (But don’t take our word for it! Try our cookies as soon as you can!) Demand grew, and the cookie micro-enterprise was asked to ramp up production from 100 to 600 packages per week.  Last year, our partnership with ShopRite along with grants from the Dominion Foundation, the Harvard Business School/Greenwich Porsche, and the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut, among others, allowed us to purchase a commercial bakery oven and produce the cookies in ShopRite’s New London bakery.

The cookie production micro-enterprise is now a stand-alone operation, receiving trainees from our Culinary Arts program who are involved in all aspects of production, from making the dough to using the equipment and the oven to packaging, delivery and mail-order shipping. The cookie production crew works with the Culinary Arts program to create custom orders for corporate events, display tables, special occasions, weddings—from individually wrapped and branded to an entire mountain on a tray.
